About Christian Science

The Church of Christ, Scientist was founded in 1879 in Boston, Massachusetts, by Mary Baker Eddy. The church was founded “to commemorate the word and works of our master, which should reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing” (Manual of the Mother Church).

In Christian Science, God is seen as always upholding health and well-being. The spiritual ideas in the Bible show that the power of prayer lies not in faith alone, but in a deeper understanding of God’s divine laws, which can be practically applied to the needs of today’s world.

Sunday services are held throughout the year and weekly testimony meetings are held on Wednesdays, where following brief readings from the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, those in attendance are invited to give testimonies of healing brought about through Christian Science prayer.

As a branch of the Mother Church, we view all our church activities as healing opportunities, bringing renewal and healing to our members, visitors, and communities around the world. Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist, defines church as “the structure of Truth and Love”. Our members seek to learn and grow in their individual understanding of this idea with expectation of progress and fruition.

Beliefs and Teachings

Teachings of Christian Science

Mary Baker Eddy, the founder of Christian Science, was asked if Christian Scientists had a religious creed. She answered, “They have not, if by that term is meant doctrinal beliefs” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 496–497). She did provide a few tenets—or key points—that briefly summarize the teachings of Christian Science. They are rooted in the Bible.

Tenets of Christian Science

  1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
  2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God’s image and likeness.
  3. We acknowledge God’s forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.
  4. We acknowledge Jesus’ atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man’s unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.
  5. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
  6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.

The Bible

The Bible and Its Teachings

The Bible is the foundation for the theology and practice of Christian Science. Jesus’ ministry especially shows how we can experience healing and regeneration as we learn that our true identity is completely spiritual. The first chapter of Genesis states clearly that we are made in the image and likeness of God. The lives of Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and the prophets, as well as those of Jesus and his followers, are rich examples of God’s power to reform and heal.

What to Expect at Church

Many members and visitors have experienced healing at a Christian Science church service.
